Event narrative

A 47-year-old, semi-tractor-trailer driver from Tennessee was killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Jackson County, Indiana State Police said. The crash happened about 2:30 AM. Friday in the northbound lanes of I-65 near mile marker 36 when the driver lost control while crossing the icy bridge over U.S. 31, police said. After leaving the roadway, the semi slid down an embankment and struck a concrete barrier. During the impact, the semi's trailer detached and went thought the cab, killing the driver, police said. I-65 was shut down for nearly four hours before reopening.

One to two inches of snow was observed in nearby Lawrence County.

Wider weather episode

A strong low pressure system moved just north of central Indiana, producing widespread rainfall followed by very strong winds. Non-thunderstorm winds gusted over 55 mph at times. The rain eventually changed to snow. Minor snow accumulations were observed. However, a truck driver was killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Jackson County after loosing control while crossing an icy bridge.
