Wider weather episode
A very warm and unstable air-mass advected into the region. Outflow from morning convection and some mid/high clouds helped to keep the area capped for most of the day. Convection began firing over Iowa around 18 UTC and quickly formed into a forward propagating Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) that followed the instability gradient across southern Lake Michigan. The storms produced gusty winds as they came onshore.
