Event narrative
Spring Creek Road leading into Clark Fork washed out near the confluence of Lightning and Spring Creeks. 100 to 150 homes and residents near Clark Fork, Idaho were stranded after two roads were washed out. In the Lightning Creek drainage, washouts were up to 700 feet long and 15 feet deep. A debris jam was also observed just west of Lightning Creek. The creek carried large cedars and cottonwoods that fell from mountainsides upstream.
Wider weather episode
Very heavy rains with a foot of rain in two days over the mountains led to flooding in portions of Bonner county. Estimated dollar damage amount to roads was estimated to be 2 million dollars. The brunt of the damage occurred near Lightning Creek, although widespread damage to backcountry roads due to washouts and downfalls was observed.
