Event narrative
Estimated thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph produced substantial structural damage to the drive-in theater and the town ball park. Numerous large trees were also blown down.
Wider weather episode
On July 18, an intensely strong shortwave trough moved to the northeast across Western Montana during the late afternoon and evening hours. The breaking of a strong mid level cap released copious amount of low level instability which aided in the rapid development of severe thunderstorm super cells.
