Flash Flood — Galax (c), Virginia

2013-08-12 · near Galax, Galax (c), Virginia

Event narrative

The public reported that the intersection of Shaw Street and Givens Street was flooded and as a result impassable and closed.

Wider weather episode

A stationary front to a warm front remain draped across southern Virginia and southern West Virginia. This boundary combined with a persistent moist, unstable air mass across the region served as a focusing mechanism for scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorm development across the region once again. As had been the case much of the summer of 2013, heavy rain and flash flooding were once again the main concerns. Thunderstorms across southwest Virginia during the evening prompted several flash flood warnings netting several flash flood events as rainfall of two to four inches fell in flash flood prone areas within a couple of hours.
