Wider weather episode
A strong cold front moving east across the Ohio Valley stalled as it moved over the Mid Atlantic. This allowed numerous showers and thunderstorms to develop from the Central Foothills into northern Virginia during the afternoon of July 16th. Many of these storms became severe, producing damaging winds that downed large trees.
