A major winter storm located over the Mississippi Valley on the morning of the 14th moved northeast during the day. A secondary low developed off the Mid-Atlantic coast and intensified rapidly by the morning of the 15th. The secondary low continued to intensify as it moved through the Gulf of Maine during the morning of the 15th and into the Canadian Maritimes by the morning of the 16th. The low spread heavy snow across all of western Maine with amounts generally ranging from 8 to 14 inches.
