An area of low pressure moved across the northern Gulf of Mexico January 28th and 29th. This system spread moisture northward across a very cold arctic airmass in place across the deep south. The precipitation fell as a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow across northwest parts of the area Tuesday afternoon and spread across the remainder of the area Tuesday night and ended Wednesday morning. Precipitation changed to snow across northern counties Tuesday night with freezing rain and sleet across southern areas. 1 to 3 inches of sleet and snow fell across most inland areas with freezing rain accumulations of a one-quarter to one-half an inch near the coast.
