Nearly an inch of rain fell in approximately 30 minutes.

The start of the southwest monsoon season was becoming established by mid July as high pressure aloft strengthened over the southern plains. Strong storms developing on the leading edge of this push of moisture into western Colorado brought numerous reports of heavy rainfall amounts and some debris flows.
