A strong low pressure system moved from the mid Mississippi Valley to the middle Atlantic

Coast pulling chilly, moisture laden air across the Southern Appalachian mountains. The orographic lift generated by the strong northwesterly flow behind the low resulted in an accumulation of several inches of snow in the higher terrain along the Tennessee and North Carolina border.
