Event narrative
According to a press release from the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office, NCSO deputies arrived at the home on Shoreline Drive at approximately 11:30 a.m. cdt and discovered the victim lying on the ground in his backyard. A witness reported hearing a loud boom that shook the house. The victim was found in the backyard a few minutes later. The NCSO deputies on the scene noticed that the tree that the man was lying near had clearly been struck by lightning. In addition, the victim had a burn mark on his stomach.

A strong upper level trough moved out of the Texas Hill Country...towards the region during the late morning, afternoon and evening hours of May 9th. Strong instability developed across the region with peak heating and a strong capping inversion initially during the morning broke during the day. Scattered strong thunderstorms developed as early as mid morning across portions of Northeast Texas. These storms produced continuous cloud to ground lightning. A fatality was reported in Nacogdoches County Texas when a man was struck by lightning while standing in close proximity to a tree that was struck.
