Event narrative

A moderate front, approaching the central Aleutians from the southwest, was preceded by brisk east to southeast winds. Gusts at the Dutch Harbor Spit, in the lee of Mount Balleyhoo, reached 77 mph between 1 am ADT and 1:30 am ADT Monday. Wind gusts above 60 mph began at the site just after 8pm ADT Sunday, finally diminishing below 60 mph at 6 am ADT Monday, just before frontal passage. Winds in this area are often 'super-gradient' and come down as "williwas" from the mountain.
