Dense fog developed along the north slopes of the San Bernardino Mountains following a wet cold front the proceeding day. A minor crash occurred when a car that had slowed for the near zero visibility was hit from behind. This caused a chain reaction of accidents over the next five minutes. Over fifty rescue personnel and10 ambulances were used to untangle the vehicles and transport the injured.
