Brisk northwest winds were observed locally at the Dutch Harbor Spit late Sunday and very early Monday. Brisk northwest winds were observed along much of the eastern Aleutians on the back side of a moderate 993 mb low between Cold Bay and Port Heiden late Sunday.At the Dutch Harbor Spit site, wind gusts above 60 mph were recorded from just after 7 pm ADT Sunday through 1:30 am Monday. Peak winds reached 78 mph at the Spit site at 11 pm ADT Sunday. The winds at this site are typically highly variable in both direction and speed, coming down from Mount Balleyhoo as williwas.
