Tropical Storm Gordon formed in the Gulf of Mexico about 375 miles west of Naples late on September 15. It moved northeast, brieflly intensified to hurricane strength, then moved ashore in the Big Bend area of Florida as a tropical storm late on September 17. The outer fringes of Gordon moved across south Florida producing 3-6 inches of rain, numerous funnel clouds and waterspouts and at least three tornadoes.
