Event narrative
A moderate 970 mb low, located just north of Amchitka Island early Tuesday moved north into the central Bering Sea late in the day, where it began to weaken. Strong southwesterly winds were observed along the back side of the storm, with gusts reaching an impressive 89 mph in a squall at Atka right around noon. Just west of Atka, southwest wind gusts at Adak reached 66 mph Tuesday morning. The associated front, in an arc to just east of Atka at 3 am Tuesday, elongated northeast into the southwest Alaskan Coast and Alaska Peninsula and southwest late Tuesday. Prefrontal wind gusts reached 73 mph at the Dutch Harbor Spit between 9 and 9:30 am.
