Event narrative
Six inches of snow fell near the Mule Pass Tunnel forcing closure of Highway 80 for several hours. Also, 2 to 4 inches of snow fell causing icy conditions on Interstate 10 and other major highways across Cochise county.
Wider weather episode
The second winter storm of the season originated over the Gulf of Alaska. By the morning of the 6th, the low closed off over southeast Arizona. Accompanying the system was an 160kt 250mb jet. Low topped strong thunderstorms developed over the Tucson Metro area on the 7th with reports of pea size and marble size hail. Snow was accumulating as low as 4000 feet.
