Event narrative
A deepening storm, located 120 miles south of Attu late Tuesday, strengthened to an intense 958 mb center early Wednesday as it curved northwest toward the Komandorskiye Islands of Russia. The front associated with the storm elongated east and north toward the central Aleutians, into Amchitka Island late Wednesday morning.Pre-frontal southwest winds reached 71 mph at Shemya early Wednesday. Winds at the old Air Force station began gusting 60+ mph just after 1 am Wednesday morning. Winds shifted south with the frontal passage at around 5 am Wednesday, with gusts decreasing below 60 mph by 7 am that morning.
