An intense 960 mb low 100 miles southwest of Shemya very early Wednesday, curved northwest to the Komandorskiye Islands late Wednesday. Strong southeasterly winds along the northeast quadrant of the storm brushed the western Aleutians. Gusts reached 71 mph at Shemya between 2 and 3 am Wednesday. Although gusts diminished below 60 mph at the site by 7 am as the front passed, gusty south winds persisted into early Thursday morning. Additionally, at least one vessel near Attu reported sustained winds close to 60 mph Wednesday afternoon.
