An intense winter storm system that brought heavy snow to the Black Hills also brought very strong winds to the western South Dakota plains. Northwest winds of 35 to 40 mph were common throughout the day into the evening. Many locations had gusts to 60 mph, while the peak gust was 70 mph at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
