A 47-year-old man drowned while trying to rescue two girls from a riptide at Island Beach State Park on July 1st. This was part of the state park that does not have lifeguards on duty. A 7-year-old and a 8-year-old were caught in a riptide. Two men jumped into the water to rescue them. One of them became caught in the same riptide and passed the girl to a third man who also jumped into the ocean to help rescue the girls. That man drowned before he could be rescued. Another man became stuck in another riptide on July 2nd about 500 yards farther south. Another man reached him and kept afloat with a boogie board until the Coast Guard and lifeguards rescued them.
