A major winter storm dropped 8 to 12 inches of snow in southeast Kansas. The hardest hit areas were in Cherokee County where up to 14 inches fell near Galena and Columbus. In addition to numerous accidents reported by law enforcement officers over the area, heavy snowfall collapsed a carport onto a car in Baxter Springs, killing the individual in the car. No other serious injuries were reported.
