A moderate front across the extreme eastern Aleutians Tuesday was preceded by brisk southeast winds. By late Wednesday, the front extended in a long arc from the eastern Copper River Basin to Kodiak and southwestward. The parent low deepened to 974 mbs about 300 miles north of Atka Tuesday, then slowly began to weaken and move toward the west coast of the State.Prefrontal wind gusts reached 73 mph at the Dutch Harbor Spit between noon and 1 pm ADT Tuesday. Gusts there diminished below 60 mph at 4 pm.Wind gusts at Cold Bay briefly reached 60 mph in gusts between 3 am and 4 am Wednesday. These winds were observed on the southeast side of the low...well after the front had passed.Wind gusts of 68 mph were recorded at Glenn Alps, along the Upper Anchorage Hillside between midnight and 6 pm Wednesday, after which gusts subsided to less than 60 mph. At the Portage ASOS, east southeast wind gusts peaked at 62 mph between 1 pm and 2 pm Wednesday as the front neared, accompanied by moderate rainfall.
