Bitterly cold temperatures persisted over upstate South Carolina during mid-December, eventually reaching dangerous status. A 79-year old male Alzheimer's patient died of susoected hypothermia sometime during the night of the 12th-13th. The heat was off in the man's mobile home when the county coroner went to investigate. The extreme cold would persist until after Christmas.
