What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A small tornado tracked for approximately 1.3 miles through a residential area near Utica NY. The tornado was rated as an EF1 with maximum estimated wind speeds of 90 MPH. Dozens of trees were chopped up or felled by the tornado and one residence lost two walls of an attached garage. Several other residences experienced shingle and siding damages.

The wider storm

A strong upper level system moving across the region led to the development of numerous severe thunderstorms across central New York during the afternoon and evening hours of July 8th. With a tremendous favorable atmospheric wind pattern present, severe thunderstorms resulted in widespread wind damage along with several tornadoes.

Began near Deerfield (43.1200, -75.2200).
