A tight surface pressure gradient produced persistent strong winds across northwestern South Dakota from just prior to midnight Jan 29, through the night and most of the day on Jan 30th. Winds were sustained 30 to 40 mph with gusts to over 60 mph were common during the morning hours of Jan 30.
