Heavy Snow — Lynn Canal-glacier Bay, Alaska

2001-03-31 · Lynn Canal-glacier Bay, Alaska

Wider weather episode

The Haines Customs Station at Pleasant Camp (elevation 812 feet) received 11.2 inches of snow in less than 24 hours. This was a microscale event as arctic air trapped in the Chilkat Valley was overrun by warmer, maritime air from Lynn Canal. The snowfall was enhanced by upslope flow where the valley converges. Water equivalent of the snow was only 0.67 inches. Interestingly, no precipitation fell in the community of Haines or at the Haines airport, about 32 miles southeast of the border.
