Event narrative

Winds estimated at 35 knots following the passage of a thunderstorm outflow boundary produced a rapid steepening of waves on the Indian River, just north of the Eau Gallie in Indian Harbour Beach. Waves estimated near three feet capsized an 18-foot boat with six occupants midway between the causeway and Dragon Point at the south end of Merritt Island. A four year old boy and elderly woman became trapped underneath the boat and died after being transported to a nearby hospital. The other four people were pulled from the water by rescuers and transported to the hospital, then released. All onboard the boat were wearing life jackets.

Wider weather episode

Scattered thunderstorms moved east across Brevard County producing a period of wind gusts near 35 knots. An outflow boundary in advance of the storms created rough seas over a portion of the Indian River. A boat caught in the strong winds capsized. Two people became trapped beneath the capsized boat and died.
