Event narrative

Fifteen persons were injured from a lightning strike at the Elk County Fair in Kersey, about 5 miles south-southwest of St. Marys. About 7 were transported to the hospital for treatment. Most of the victims were trying to hold down a tent at the fairgrounds when the tent was struck. The charge traveled through the ground to a food concession stand next to the tent where 4 other persons leaning on a metal counter were also shocked.
