2015-01-06 to 2015-01-07 · Eastern Chichagof Island, Alaska

Event narrative

Hoonah cooperative observer measured 8.4 inches of new snow that had fallen overnight. This was the first significant snowfall in weeks. Snow rapidly tapered off during the morning. No damage reported.

Wider weather episode

Another case of warm moist air from the south overrunning north cooler air trapped at low levels in the northern panhandle. This caused snow north of Frederick Sound on the night of Jan 6th and the snow persisted for much of this area on the 7th. Heavier amounts occurred for Juneau and Tenakee-Hoonah. Major commercial airline flights were not disrupted but smaller aircraft were grounded and snow removal operations kept a good pace with the snowfall rate. A few instances of freezing rain or freezing drizzle were reported.
