Event narrative

A grass fire burned more than 35,000 acres in the southeastern part of the county and forced evacuations of the nearby towns of Carbon, Gorman, and Desdemona. The community of Kokomo was essentially demolished. Thirty-six buildings, including homes, were destroyed. Numerous livestock were lost in the fire. The fire was thirty-five miles long.
