Event narrative

One quarter inch of ice accumulation reported in the Winkler County Airport Automated Surface Observing System, just 14 miles south of the Lea County line. In addition, roads were closed in central Lea County on December 30th and 31st with southern Lea County in between the ice accumulation report and the road closures.

Wider weather episode

A mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow fell over southeast New Mexico and west Texas as an arctic airmass resided over the region, and downstream of a slow moving upper trough.
