Event narrative

A NWS storm survey team found that an EF-1 tornado, with maximum wind speeds of 110 MPH, crossed the Chattahoochee River from Barbour County, Alabama into southwest Stewart County, Georgia southwest of the community of Coffington. The tornado tracked northeast for nearly 14 miles before lifting near the community of Julia along State Highway 39. The tornado mainly caused damage to trees with numerous hardwood and softwood trees either snapped or uprooted. [11/23/14: Tornado #1, County #1-1, EF1, Stewart, 2014:018].

Wider weather episode

Moderate instability and strong shear associated with a deepening upper-level trough and surface low produced scattered thunderstorms across portions of Central Georgia. Several severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and several tornadoes occurred in the afternoon and early evening hours along and behind a warm front lifting north across the state.
