Event narrative

Two boys, aged 9 and 11, were struck by lightning while standing under a tree and playing in the rain. The 9-year-old died a short time later at Wishard Hospital. The 11-year-old was injured, but survived.

Wider weather episode

A series of severe thunderstorms moved through central Indiana on the evening of 18 July 2006. One young boy was killed by a lightning strike in Marion County. Lightning also sparked several fires in Johnson County.
