Scattered severe thunderstorms developed on July 4 due to an approaching cold front and a very unstable airmass residing over the Mid-Atlantic. The severe storms formed along the Blue Ridge Mountains and moved east into the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Most of the damages were caused by downed trees.
