Waves as high as 6 feet washed a man into the lake as he was sitting on a rock along the shore of Lake Superior at Bluefin Bay Resort. He was wearing swimming trunks as he had just exited a nearby sauna. Another man who was trying to reach out to the victim from a rock slipped into the lake and was washed away by the high waves. Both men drowned. Winds measured by the Grand Marais ASOS were northeast from about 10 to 15 miles an hour since midnight but were decreasing to under 10 mph at the time of the drownings.
