Winter Weather — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
2015-01-06 · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Wider weather episode
A quick moving Alberta Clipper, dropping southeast from Canada and through the Northern Plains, tracked across the Ohio Valley and into the Mid Atlantic by the morning of the 6th. Light snow developed across eastern Pennsylvania during the early morning prior to daybreak and continued through the morning commute, before tapering off during the afternoon to early evening. Accumulations were mainly from around one inch to two and a half inches. With temperatures mainly in the 20s and snow to liquid ratios in the 15 to 1 range for most of the area, the snow quickly accumulated and adversely affected the morning commute. In fact, slippery and icy conditions continued on some area roadways through the evening of the 6th, even after the accumulating snow had ended. In the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia, icy conditions along the 6700 block of North Broad Street resulted in a fatal car crash when a 53 year-old man lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree shortly after 900 pm EST in the evening.
Representative snowfall totals included 2.4 inches in Concord Township (Delaware), 2.3 inches in Chadds Ford (Delaware) and Folsom (Delaware) and also Eagleville (Montgomery), 2.2 inches in Wayne (Delaware) and Doylestown (Bucks), 2.1 inches in East Coventry Township (Chester) and Glenmoore (Chester) and also Huffs Church (Berks) and at Blue Marsh Dam (Berks), 2.0 inches in Spring City (Chester) and Kennett Square (Chester) and also West Norriton (Montgomery) and in Gilbertsville (Montgomery), 1.8 inches in Furlong (Bucks) and Collegeville (Montgomery), 1.6 inches in Rockledge (Philadelphia) and Schnecksville (Lehigh), 1.5 inches in West Rockhill Township (Bucks) and at the Philadelphia International Airport (Philadelphia), and 1.4 inches at the Lehigh Valley International Airport (Lehigh).
