Heavy rain fell within a few hours on ground already saturated from previous rains. Seventy-seven homes, trwnty siz businesses, four public buildings, and three churches were heavily damaged in the Chattanooga suburbs of Red Bank and Hixson. Many people had to be evacuated to emergency shelters. Numerous streets were flooded stranding cars and motorists.
