Following nearly 8 inches of rain fallen in 12 hours,the decaying eye of Hurricane Fran skirted eastern Bladen County thursday evening with winds gusting 80 mph. Forty homes were destroyed, 467 damaged. Bladenboro business district was 4 ft deep in rainwater flooding. There was one death, a heart attack during peak of storm, with rescue efforts blocked by many trees across road. Power was out for days to 95% of the county, more than 2000 homes. Radio tower for WGQR radio was downed.
