What F1 means. This tornado was rated on Fujita’s original scale, used until 2007. F1 meant moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken; the scale paired it with winds of 73–112 mph, figures later judged too high, especially toward the top of the scale, and revised downward in the Enhanced Fujita scale. Ratings then, as now, came from the damage.

The wider storm

The same storm that hit Midland in Acadia Parish developed another tornado, and touched down in Basile on the Acadia/Evangeline Parish line. The worst hit area was the high school, where the middle school wing was completely destroyed. A total of 27 homes and businesses received damage in Basile, of which 15 were considered destroyed or received major damage. The 3 minor injuries resulted from cuts and bumps from flying debris during the tornado.
