A 17-year-old male from Georgia disappeared in the surf at New Smyrna Beach around 1600 EST on May 31. His body washed ashore the following day.

Wider weather episode

Strong easterly flow caused rough surf and strong rip currents late in the month. Several dozen rip current related rescues and two drownings were reported along the Volusia County coastline.
