Event narrative
Thunderstorms produced nearly 3 inches of rain in parts of Cobb county during a 3 hour period, according to radar estimates. Newspaper articles said as much as 5 inches may have fallen as slow moving thunderstorms persisted over the area. Poor drainage may have also been responsible for accumulating 6 to 12 inches of water on some roads. About 90 homes were damaged by flood waters. About a dozen people in the Powder Springs area were evacuated, due to concern that the dam on a small private lake may have weakened. Cobb county officials estimated that the storms would cost affected homeowners $1.2 million.
