Event narrative
Three car dealerships just north of Canyon sustained heavy damage to around two hundred to three hundred vehicles and to their buildings with an estimated cost of one and a half million to two million dollars per dealership. The rest of the damage was to windows, skylights and roofs of homes on the north side of Canyon.
Wider weather episode
The combination of outflow boundaries from earlier thunderstorms along with a cold front over southwestern Kansas moving into the northwest Texas and western Oklahoma panhandles served as a triggering mechanism for severe thunderstorms with large and damaging hail across the western and central Texas panhandle during the evening hours.
