Prolonged excessive heat and humidity took a toll on the unprepared. In Cape Girardeau County at Gordonville, a 69-year-old man died from heat causes. The man died outdoors while spending the entire day outdoors repairing a fence. The exact cause of death was listed as complete vascular collapse due to heat exposure. High temperatures were around 100 degrees during the last few days of the month, with heat indices peaking between 110 and 115 degrees. A Heat Advisory was posted for over a week. The American Red Cross opened heat shelters in Cape Girardeau and Scott Counties, but usage was minimal. Hundreds of fans were distributed to those in need.
