Heat — Perry, Pennsylvania

Direct deaths

Event narrative

A Perry County elderly and her daughter were found dead in their Oliver Township home near Newport. The women both had pre-existing medical conditions and their deaths were listed as natural, with the heat a contributing factor. Temperatures exceeded 100 degrees for the three days from the 4th through the 6th. Electrical service was strained, and the Harrisburg division of Pennsylvania Power and Light set an all time record for usage. The heat also took a toll on poultry farms. Heat affected egg production, and also increased mortality with hundreds of chickens dying each day the temperature was above 100 degrees.
