Event narrative
A combination of high tides and brisk westerly winds swept waves across the Homer Spit road, tearing up chunks of pavement and strewing debris across the highway. A high tide of 22.7 feet caused flooding along low-lying areas of the spit. Most of the highway damage was confined to the shoulder, where the pavement was undercut by wave action, according to the State Department of Transportation.
