The wider storm
A deep upper-level trough and strong short wave moved through the region during the day. Strongly diffluent upper-level flow combined with a sharp cold front and steep mid-level lapse rates to produce widespread severe thunderstorms across north Georgia with numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds.
