A prolonged period of unseasonably high heat indices blanketed most of the southeastern US. Afternoon temperatures mainly between 95 and 100 combined with dewpoints in the mid 70s produced heat index values in the 105 to 110 range. The heat wave finally broke on Jun 26th with cloud cover and precipitation.

Wider weather episode

High pressure aloft with westerly flow, combined with surface high pressure and southwesterly flow, led to a prolonged period of high heat and humidity for the entire southeastern US.
