The Weatherflow site on the Isle of Palms pier measured a 42 knot wind gust with a passing thunderstorm. A peak wind gust of 62 knots occurred 5 minutes later.
Wider weather episode
Strong thunderstorms developed in the afternoon hours within a very unstable environment and a sharp surface trough. These thunderstorms pushed toward the coast and produced very strong wind gusts along area beaches and the adjacent coastal waters.
