Coastal Flood — Tyrrell, North Carolina

2015-10-04 to 2015-10-05 · Tyrrell, North Carolina

Event narrative

Persistent northeast winds led to high water over southern portion of Albemarle Sound producing coastal flooding over the northern part of Tyrrell County. Water levels were 2 to 4 feet above normal flooding several roads, some in Columbia.

Wider weather episode

Low pressure south of eastern North Carolina combined with strong high pressure to the north produced strong onshore flow October 2nd through the 5th. These onshore winds led to locally heavy rain and significant coastal flooding in many areas. Large swells from distant Hurricane Joaquin also enhanced waves along the coast leading to very rough surf.
